PERSONNEL BACKGROUND
The Fake FamilyBelova was assigned to Melina Vostokoff and Alexei Shostakov to play the role of the couple's fake daughter together with the young Natasha Romanoff in their mission in Ohio at the young age of three. The mission lasted for three years and due to her age, she easily believed the facade to be a real family life. Alexei made the young Yelena believe that they will soon have their big adventure, causing her to be excited of what turned out to be the worst night of her life.When Shostakov and Vostokoff completed their mission by taking down the North Institute, the fake family made their quick departure from Ohio whilst struggling to eliminate their tail of S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents as well as local enforcements. They travelled to Cuba where Yelena realized what is to happen to her now that the mission is over, thus leaving the fake family no need to stay together. She and Natasha were then taken to Russia to be trained in the Red Room Academy as ordered by General Dreykov.Becoming a Black WidowYelena was regarded as an exemplary student of the Academy after acing the challenges and demonstrating great skill as well as intelligence in training. Soon, she managed to survive until graduation wherein she underwent the ceremonious practices done by the Academy to their newly officiated Black Widows, including an involuntary hysterectomy and chemical subjugation. Now an official member of the Black Widow Units, Yelena rose to earn the rank of a Captain to her own Black Widow Unit.The Chase for the Red DustCaptain Yelena Belova and her unit were assigned to retrieve the Red Dust, a counteragent designed by a former Widow to free someone from Chemical Subjugation. The Mission's target was Oksana, another former Widow tasked to safekeep the Red Dust from the Red Room's forces. In the midst of their assassination attempt, Oksana was alerted of their threat which prompted the former Widow to flee.Captain Yelena Belova managed to reach her and injure her in a close fight, but Oksana was able to spray Captain Yelena with the Red Dust before the Widow could deliver her killing blow. It was that incident that freed Yelena from the Red Room's control and although devastated for what she did to Oksana, Yelena agreed to continue the fallen woman's task by eliminating her own tracker and running away from her own team to keep the Red Dust out of the Red Room Academy's hands.Reuniting with her Fake FamilyYelena sent the Red Dust to Natasha Romanoff, which led the Avenger outside of her doorstep in Budapest. The two devised a plan to take down the Red Room by seeking their former fake parents' aid to locate the facility. They break Alexei out of prison and trace Melina in a remote location outside of St. Petersburg where they share a brief dinner together. However, their past issues shone a light on the strain in their relationship and trust among one another.Taking down the Red RoomThe Fake Family was attacked by the Red Room's forces, which dooms them on the Academy's capture. Yelena was knocked unconscious along with Natasha and Alexei, only to wake up and find herself back in the place of her nightmares, the Red Room. She awoken just as she was about to be examined due to the failure in her chemical subjugation. Yelena managed to the doctors and reach the Red Dust which she showered over the Widows in the midst of their fight with Natasha Romanoff. She then makes her escape with the other Widows as the Red Room's collapse was triggered, but changes her mind at the last minute upon seeing General Dreykov in his attempt to escape as well. Yelena then makes a hard decision of sacrificing herself in order to blow up General Dreykov's Quintjet.While free falling in the sky, Yelena spots Natasha who was determined to save her. The Avenger secures her in a parachute before letting go to face Taskmaster. Yelena then landed safely among the debrisโ albeit, knocked unconscious due to exhaustion and strain. She wakes up, thanks to Natasha's call. The two then patches up their sisterly relationship with an embrace before parting ways just as the S.H.I.E.L.D. Forces arrived.Freeing the WidowsFollowing the destruction of the Red Room, Yelena went to live with her fake parents, Melina and Alexei in Russia. Melina duplicated the recipe of the Red Dust, which allowed Yelena to track down the other Widows and free them from their own Mind Control.The BlipIn a mission to free another Widow named Anna, Yelena found herself fading into ashes for a quick second as everything around her changed. She exits the bathroom, confused and a little scared, only to find Anna who then tells her that the day of her mission was five years ago. Anna explains that Yelena was among those who were dustedโ snapped out of existence after Thanos' attack in Wakanda. Yelena was horrified of the revelation, but her immediate thought was to contact her sister, Natasha Romanoff, and tell her she's okay.The Mission to kill Clint BartonFollowing the events of the Blip, Yelena visits her sister's grave to pay her respects. Valentina, her current employer known as Madame Hydra, finds her in mourning and references her grief in revealing Yelena's next target, Clint Barton. A grief-stricken Yelena then flies to New York where she locates Clint Barton in a rooftop. The Widow immediately engages a fight but due to Kate Bishop's interference, Yelena postpones her attempt to kill the Avenger as she did not want an innocent standing in the way.Yelena then pays Kate Bishop a visit in her apartment where she reveals her identity to the young hero. She tells Kate Bishop about her sister, Natasha, and how she blames Clint Barton for her death. After Kate Bishop refuses to provide her Clint's whereabouts, Yelena proceeds to make her exit, but not before warning the young hero to stay out of her way. Following the confrontation with Kate Bishop, Yelena then tracks her employer's client which she reveals to Bishop as her own mother, Eleanor Bishop. The Widow then sets on to make her second attempt at Clint Barton's life on Christmas Eve.As chaos sparked in the celebration, Yelena Belova sneaks out of the scene to go after Barton, but she was interfered on once more by Kate Bishop. And although Yelena can easily take down the young and inexperienced hero, she decides to play along in a tussle before sprinting for Barton. The Widow finally managed to confront her target in an ice skating rink where she mercilessly beats him up with Batons as means of letting out her grief. Yelena then draws her gun, ready to complete the mission, but Clint makes a revelation about Natasha which makes her realize that she's been led along and manipulated for her grief all along. Yelena then decides to spare Clint Barton, before leaving to find her Employer.
